I just recalled a song I heard on Doctor Demento in the late 80s or early 90s. Sorry in advance that I can't remember more details!

It is mostly (if not all) spoken word, with an old, feeble-sounding voice asking something to the effect of, "What's the matter, bub?" and then detailing a bunch of minor catastrophes that have happened to that person. One detail was a car getting stuck in mud and his girlfriend leaving him...?
Then with a sudden change, some band-like instruments start clanging and the man's voice becomes confident, yelling to get your chin up. And that section always ended with him repeating a certain word or phrase.
And then it would go back to no instruments, the sad voice, and another list of bad things that had happened.

Since I taped the show I can't recall if it was played many times or I just re-played the tape many times. There also may have been more than one iteration of this song by this artist. I wish I could remember more...but if I could remember more I would probably have found it by now. :)

It's "The Old Philosopher" by Eddie Lawrence, a single that got as high as #34
on the Billboard chart back in 1956...there's a fuller description at
