Any comedy buzz around the song, "What does the fox say?"
What started as a goof has become a hit, but my guess is while it's weird, it's not demented.
What do you think?

Well, it made the Dr. Demento top ten last month, so it must qualify as "demented" right?

There are a number of "mainstream" songs that I heard first on the
show..."Loser" by Beck comes to mind, and years earlier "Rock Lobster"...also a
whole bunch more that I was surprised to hear in the context of the Dr Demento
Show after learning of them elsewhere: "Turning Japanese", "88 Lines About 44
Women", even Melanie's "Brand New Key" (okay, to be fair, that was at the
request of Rachel Trachtenberg)....

There are also a lot of things that got popular but aren't especially
demented...I'm thinking the Langley Schools Music Project version of "Desperado"
in particular...and some that the Doc himself didn't seem to care for (Cartman's
rendition of "Come Sail Away", anyone?) but played anyway....

And of course, every Veteran's Day we get "Touch a Name on the Wall" which is
about the farthest thing from "funny music" I've heard in my life....r

I was just thinking about this the other day. Some of the biggies were "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and "I'm Too Sexy". I remember hearing the latter on the show and he said it had been #1 in England, and I thought nothing like that would ever be big here. I was certainly wrong on that! Also "Parents Just Don't Understand" and "Nightmare On My Street" were on the show before the local stations got hip to them. And of course anything by Al, but that goes without saying. I think there are a few more big mainstream hits that were on Dr. D first. Well, "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" of course. And "Valley Girl". "Pac-Man Fever" might have been on his KMET show just prior to breaking nationally.

Actually, he even played that back in 1971, when it was #1, on the first-ever Dr. D appearance on KMET. Of course, that was before it was strictly a comedy/novelty show, but he was playing it for the sexual innuendo, not because it was a pop hit.

Then there's the opposite, where a demented song that's huge on the charts doesn't get played on the show, which is interesting, buts that's normally due to it already saturating the airwaves. For instance, "The Streak" wasn't played on the show (or at least not on the national show) when it was big on the charts. It was an extra during the top 20 at the end of the year. Or "Kung Fu Fighting" which doesn't seem overly demented to me, but was played on the show much later, definitely not when it was a hit.
