This is one of the few times someone has been interviewed on the same show
both in and out of character. Stanley Spadowski/Michael Richards comes to
mind, and Jonathan & Darlene Edwards/Paul Weston & Jo Stafford. There may
be one or two other examples.

Maybe Spinal Tap, on March 11, 1984...I thought I remembered a similar
arrangement with Jake and Elwood Blues, but if so I can't find it in the
playlist archives...or maybe they weren't both in and out of character on the
same show....

It's a philosophical question whether someone like Mel Blanc doing voices during
an interview constitutes "in character"....r

Not that I recall. They do talk about performing on stage in character, but I don't think Dr. D interviewed them in character.

I don't think they ever directly appeared on the show, but on 80-32 they pre-taped some intros to records when John Landis appeared on the show. And you're right, they did pre-tape one in character, while the others weren't. They weren't interviewed, but this sort of counts.

I don't think Dr. D interviewed him or Daws Butler in character, they just briefly did a voice as an example. However, this reminded me of a couple of other voice actors. I believe he *did* interview both Donald Duck and Clarence Nash in 1975, so that's definitely another example! And in 1982 he interviewed Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. and The Chipmunks, so that counts as well.

More along the lines of the Don Novello/Father Guido Sarducci situation would be
any comedian who has a character so sharply defined that they could be
interviewed as both...although it hasn't happened on the show, someone like Paul
Reubens/Pee Wee Herman, or Andrew Dice Clay/Diceman, for example....

I remembered a case where both the performer (as himself) and the character were
interviewed, but I don't think ever on the same show: Mark Mothersbaugh/Boogie
Boy...another interview from around that same time featured Lenny and Squiggy,
but I don't they broke character during the appearance....r
