"I Love Rocky Road" had been recorded as a demo 4 months earlier, shortly
after the original by Joan Jett debuted on the Hot 100. In years prior, a
new Al recording would normally have been played ASAP by Dr. D, but that didn't
happen this time, as bigger plans were afoot. A month later a studio recording
was made for Al's first album, while the original song was still climbing
toward #1 on the chart, where it stayed for 7 weeks, until the beginning of
May. But still Al's version went unheard by most people. They were shopping
around for a record label to release the album.
The original song fell off the chart at the beginning of June, and finally on
June 17, Al debuted his version in concert. A few days later, on this June 20
show on KMET, it was decided that his studio recording could be played for the
public. It was played early in the show, and as happened with "My Bologna" and
a few other songs over the years, it got enough of an immediate reaction to
make the top ten the same night, thus being played twice in one show. (Note
that "Another One Rides The Bus" also got a strong immediate reaction on
September 14, 1980, but since it was performed as an extra during the top ten,
it wasn't eligible for inclusion in the countdown that night.)
