Tuned Sheep - Stan Freberg
Theater Of The Mind - {Stan Freberg} Stan Freberg featuring Donavan Freberg / Tip Of The Freberg

* Stan Freberg made a career with his comical and satirical takes on the
* production of commercials on television and radio as well as voicing
* some of the animated productions of movies and television in the middle
* of the 20th century, plus, he was also a recording comedian of the 50s
* and early 60s.

* Stan Freberg died of natural causes at a Santa Monica hospital on April
* the 7th.

* Freberg was a pioneer of injecting humor into real commercials after
* he began making fun of them by producing fake commercials for bogus
* products on his 50s radio show The Stan Freberg Show, and making fun
* of the pop culture institutions of the day.

* He described himself as a “guerilla satirist.”

* Freberg's inspirations were Jack Benny, Fred Allen and Norman Corwin.

* Stan Freberg (born Stanley Friberg; August 7, 1926 – April 7, 2015) was
* an American author, recording artist, animation voice actor,
* comedian, radio personality, puppeteer and advertising creative director,
* whose career began in 1944. He remained active in the industry into his late
* 80s, more than 70 years after entering it.

* He began at Warner Brothers in 1944 after talents in Hollywood arranged
* a successful audition to be a voice actor for that company's cartoon
* productions.

* Freberg's cartoon voicing works include several for Warner Brothers,
* such as Roughly Squeaking (1946) as Bertie; The Goofy Gophers as Tosh,
* and often was paired with Mel Blanc as they voiced pairs of cartoons such
* as mice Hubie and Bertie, and dogs Spike the Bulldog and Chester the Terrier.
* He also did some voices of Beaky Buzzard and Junyer Bear.

* His only screen credit for a cartoon was for The Three Little Bops in 1957,
* the feature where he famously played the three pigs, the wolf and the singing
* narrator.

* Set 1:
Three Little Bops - Warner Brothers Cartoon featuring Stan Freberg w/ Shorty Rogers And His Orchestra / That's All
Folks

* Stan began making satirical recordings for Capitol Records, and in 1951, his
* first, "John and Marsha" was released. In 1955, a seasonal recording, "The
* Night Before Christmas"/"Nuttin' for Christmas" was released.

* With Daws Butler and June Foray, Freberg produced his 1951 Dragnet parody,
* "St. George and the Dragonet", a No. 1 hit for four weeks in October 1953.
* On the record's B-side was "Little Blue Riding Hood".

* Some of his other recordings included the satires "Sh-Boom", "The Yellow Rose
* of Texas", "Rock Island Line", "The Great Pretender", "Banana Boat (Day-O)",
* and the spoof of Elvis Presley's record, "Heartbreak Hotel".

* television show. He collaborated with orchestra leader Billy May for the
* release in 1957.

* Set 3:
Wun'erful, Wun'erful! (Sides un-one And uh-two) - Stan Freberg / Tip Of The Freberg / The Very Best Of Stan Freberg /
Stan Freberg Greatest Hits / Capitol Collectors Series: Stan Freberg
The Lone Psychiatrist - {Stan Freberg} Stan Freberg, Daws Butler, And June Foray / Tip Of The Freberg

* Stan's recordings of the early 1950s were so popular that he landed his own
* radio program in 1954, called "That's Rich," and three years later, he had
* another radio show, The Stan Freberg Show on CBS Radio, where he regularly
* mocked commercials by advertising bogus products.

* Stan Freberg tacked political issues of the day on his radio show where he
* did a sketch paralleling the Cold War brinkmanship between the U.S. and Cuba.
* He also parodied Senator Joseph McCarthy and perhaps many others.

* Freberg skewered the advertising industry with his production of "Green Christmas"
* in 1958, which attacked the over commercialization of Christmas. He also produced
* another Christmas satire, "Yulenet", doing another take on the series Dragnet.

* In 1960, in the heat of the payola scandal, Freberg produced the two-sided
* "The Old Payola Roll Blues", telling the story of a corrupt recording studio
* promoter who gets a teenager who cannot sing to record a song, which would then
* be used to bribe a jazz station disc jockey to play the song on the air, but
* the disc jockey refuses in the sketch.

* Set 4:
The Old Payola Roll Blues - {Stan Freberg} Stan Freberg featuring Jesse White / Tip Of The Freberg / Golden Age Of
American Rock'N'Roll: Special Novelty Edition

* In 1961, Stan Freberg released "Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America
* Volume One: The Early Years" telling the story of American history from his point
* of view from 1492 until 1783. In 1996, Stan released a sequel, "Stan Freberg
* Presents The United States of America, Volume Two."

* On radio, The Stan Freberg Show was a 1957 replacement for Jack Benny on CBS
* radio. The satirical show, which featured elaborate production, included most of
* the team he used on his Capitol recordings, including Foray, Leeds, and Butler.

* Set 5:
The Battle Of Yorktown - Stan Freberg / Stan Freberg Presents The United States Of America, Vol. 1, The Early Years,
And Vol. 2, The Middle Years / The United States Of America, Volume 1

Planned Obsolescence - Stan Freberg / Tip Of The Freberg / Stan Freberg Presents The United States Of America, Vol.
1, The Early Years, And Vol. 2, The Middle Years / The United States Of America, Volume 2

* On Television, beginning in 1949, Freberg and Butler provided voices and were
* the puppeteers for Bob Clampett's puppet series, Time for Beany. Freberg made
* television guest appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and other TV variety shows,
* usually with Orville the Moon Man, his puppet from outer space. Freberg had
* his own ABC special, Stan Freberg Presents the Chun King Chow Mein Hour: Salute
* to the Chinese New Year (February 4, 1962), but he garnered more laughs when
* he was a guest on late night talk shows.

* When Freberg introduced satire to the field of advertising, he revolutionized
* the industry, influencing staid ad agencies to imitate Freberg by injecting
* humor into their previously dead-serious commercials. Freberg's long list of
* successful ad campaigns includes Butternut Coffee, Contadina Tomato Paste,
* Jeno's Pizza Rolls, Sunsweet Pitted Prunes, Heinz Great American Soups,
* Encyclopedia Britannica, Chun King, and many others which are also considered
* classics by critics.

* In his autobiography, It Only Hurts When I Laugh, Freberg recounts much of his
* life and early career, including his encounters with such show business legends
* as Milton Berle, Frank Sinatra and Ed Sullivan, and the struggles he endured
* to get his material on the air.

* He had brief sketches on KNX (AM) radio in the mid-1990s, beginning each with
* "Freberg here!" In one sketch, Freberg mentioned that the band played "Inhale
* to the Chief" at Bill Clinton's inauguration.

* Freberg was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. From 1995
* until October 6, 2006, Freberg hosted When Radio Was, a syndicated anthology
* of vintage radio shows.[33] The release of the 1996 Rhino CD The United States
* of America Volume 1 (the Early Years) and Volume 2 (the Middle Years) suggests
* a possible third volume.

It may be too late to do anything about it by the time you read this, but
Panoramic Radio's "Oldies Funhouse" is doing a two-part tribute to Freberg
this week and next (OF is a two-hour show)...the first part closed with the
three controversial recordings "Point of Order" (lampooning the McCarthy
hearings), "That's Right, Arthur" (taking potshots at Arthur Godfrey), and
"Worst of the Town" (letting Ed Sullivan have it), and will be repeated
Thursday night at 9-11pm MDT...I don't know what's going to be included in
part two, but the first airing will be on next Sunday 2-4pm MDT and
repeated on the following Thursday night....

Odd station, Panoramic...according to the bios, most of the DJs are blind
but there's nothing on the home page that says this was a deliberate
decision by the company....r
